4 Common Complications of Hyperhidrosis

Approximately 3% of people in the country suffer from hyperhidrosis. The impact and complications caused by hyperhidrosis are quite grave. It is an embarrassing, frustrating, and annoying disorder. Sadly, the disease can lead to several complications. Here, we will discuss some of the common complications of hyperhidrosis.

Maceration
When the skin is persistently moist, there is a wet or mushy appearance known as maceration. Unfortunately, this general breakdown of the skin cells can progress and lead to several other skin conditions. The skin problems that you may experience because of maceration are mild. Macerated skin is lighter in hue and has a wrinkled appearance. Maceration can be cured by exposing the skin to air and ensuring that the affected area is dry. Though maceration is not complicated, it can make your skin vulnerable to infections, delay the healing of the wounds and causing discomfort, skin breakdown, and pain. Thus, it is essential to keep your skin clean and dry.

Fungal infections
Excessive sweating also makes you susceptible to fungal infections. It is one of the most common complications of hyperhidrosis. The infections are predominant on the feet. Two types of fungal infections, which occur because of hyperhidrosis include athletes foot and Onychomycosis. It is predominant in people who have hyperhidrosis and are forced to wear shoes and socks every day, as then the feet become a breeding ground for the fungi to grow. Fungal infections are treatable and can be cured using anti-fungal creams. Some other severe cases may require capsules and tablets for treatment.

Emotional complications
One of the most significant complications experienced by hyperhidrosis patients is that the disorder disturbs them emotionally. It is because hyperhidrosis is socially embarrassing and can make someone with the condition want to stay in isolation. In general, hyperhidrosis causes an impact on the day-to-day life of a person, such as their emotional wellness, leisure activities, interpersonal relationships, work, personal hygiene, and self-esteem. All these are important aspects of a person’s social life, and since hyperhidrosis has a direct impact on it, it can lead to depression and anxiety. Following a study, it was found that approximately 63% of people who suffered from hyperhidrosis reportedly felt depressed and unhappy. Further, 74% of people with the problem experienced confidence issues.

Warts
Warts is a skin condition that is experienced by people with hyperhidrosis. It develops when the skin is persistently exposed to moisture that leads to skin breakdown. The skin then becomes a less-effective barrier to keeping infections at bay. Usually, warts are caused by a virus named HPV. Anyone who has warts must keep themselves covered, as they can transfer the disease to other people. Warts can be treated with the right medication. It is recommended to avoid shaving on the area affected by warts. Fortunately, warts can be easily cured.
